Targeted, Adjustable Surgical Illumination — Without the Headlight
View Medical was the second technology spin-out from Palmetto Biomedical — and one of the clearest examples of Dr. Boyd's ability to take an unmet surgical need from concept through intellectual property development, venture formation, and commercial launch. SurgiLight, was developed through View Medical and commercialized by BihlerMED Device Manufacturing.
Surgeons Needed Better Light. Headlights Weren't the Answer.
Adequate illumination is fundamental to safe surgery — but getting light where it needs to go has remained a persistent challenge, particularly in deep cavity procedures. Standard ceiling-mounted overhead lights provide broad general illumination, but they fall short when angles are difficult or cavities are deep. Shadowing, limited reach, and poor flexibility make them inadequate for many of the cases where precise visibility matters most.
The most common alternative is a surgical headlight. Headlights can deliver focused illumination, but they come with a cost. Discomfort, headaches, and neck strain from extended use are widely reported among surgeons. The ergonomic burden is real enough to have been documented in peer-reviewed literature — and for many surgeons, particularly those performing long or complex cases, headlights are a necessary inconvenience rather than a genuine solution.
In the veterinary market, the problem is more acute. Many veterinary practitioners simply don't have access to headlights at all, given the cost.
There was a clear need for focused, flexible surgical illumination that didn't require the surgeon to wear anything.
Flexible, Focused LED Illumination — Positioned Once, Held in Place
View Medical developed SurgiLight: a focused, adjustable LED surgical illumination system designed to attach to the handle of an existing overhead light or to the surgical table. A thin, flexible shaft extends toward the surgical field and holds its position once adjusted — delivering a bright, localized LED light source precisely where the surgeon needs it, without the weight, wiring, or ergonomic burden of a headlight.
The system runs on a rechargeable battery pack, freeing it from the hazards and restrictions of traditional wired setups. A custom sterile disposable sleeve covers the device during use, maintaining a sterile field and creating a repeatable per-case consumable component. The system comes in a carrying case, making it easily transferable between operating rooms and practical for surgeons who operate across multiple facilities or travel to remote locations where lighting infrastructure may be limited.
SurgiLight was developed in partnership with BihlerMED, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of handheld LED surgical lights with more than a decade of experience serving spine, orthopaedic, OB/GYN, plastics, and emergency department surgeons. The product is currently available for purchase through BihlerMED in the United States.
A Patent Portfolio Built From the Ground Up
Dr. Boyd worked with patent counsel through every stage of View Medical's IP development. A provisional U.S. patent application was filed in February 2013, followed by U.S. utility and international PCT applications in February 2014. Two patents have since issued and are active — U.S. Patent 10,458,634 (Adjustable Surgical Light Device and System) and design patent USD841,209 (Adjustable Surgical Light Device), both issued in 2019.
The core intellectual property was developed through Palmetto Biomedical and transferred to View Medical as part of the venture formation process — a pattern that reflects Dr. Boyd's consistent approach of aligning innovation, IP strategy, and commercialization from the earliest stages of development.
From Concept to Commercial Product
View Medical reflects the full arc of what Dr. Boyd brings to medical device innovation. He identified the clinical problem, conceived and prototyped the device concept, led the intellectual property development, co-founded the venture and secured funding, supported the partnership with BihlerMED, and guided the technology through commercialization.
The product was accepted into the ZeroTo510 medical device incubator program — a competitive accelerator focused on FDA class II device clearance pathways — before advancing to commercial launch through BihlerMED. That path from early concept to incubator to commercial partner is not accidental. It reflects the disciplined development approach Dr. Boyd applies across every engagement: understand the need, protect the solution, and build a credible pathway to market.
